Transit ridership increased 42% in October thanks to Fare Free Iowa City

Three months into Fare Free Iowa City, bus ridership continues to grow. In the month of October, Iowa City Transit saw an increase of 45,009 passenger trips when compared to October 2022.

Overall, since launching in August, ridership has increased 44% the past three months when compared to last year. In total, there have been 135,191 additional trips over that time as well.

City staff estimate that the increase of transit ridership has equaled to a reduction of 98 metric tons of tailpipe CO2 from personal vehicles.

Arrest made following incident at Iowa City elementary school

At 9:01 a.m., Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2023, Iowa City Police were called to Grant Wood Elementary School, 1930 Lakeside Drive, for an incident in which an armed parent threatened multiple staff members. 

Officers arrived on scene and the suspect was taken into custody without further incident.

As a result of an investigation into the incident, the suspect, Brandon J. Jones, 31, of Iowa City, was arrested and faces the following charges:

A criminal charge is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty. No other information is available at this time.

The Iowa City Community School District will have counselors at the school for staff members or students who wish to speak with someone about this incident. Community members seeking further assistance following this incident are encouraged to contact the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline by calling or texting 988.

  • Thursday, Nov. 30: Completing Zone 1 (Final Pass), & Entering Zone #2 (Final Pass) & Zone #3 (Final Pass)
  • Friday, Dec. 1: Completing Zone #2 (Final Pass), & Zone #3 (Final Pass)

Crews will not go back for missed leaf piles. Leaves need to be accessible to crews and free of parked cars. To guarantee pickup, have all of your leaves at the curb by 7 a.m. on the first day your zone is scheduled. View the zone map at www.icgov.org/leafvacuum.

Library Event: Coralville Community Clinic

Coralville Public LibraryStop by the Library for free health and social services. The UI Mobile Clinic will be in the lower level of the Library providing free basic health services on a drop-in (no appointment needed!) basis. Area social services agencies will be available to talk to.

The UI Mobile Clinic provides free:

Vitals: blood pressure ,heart rate
Labs: Cholesterol & diabetes (HbA1C) testing
Exercise+nutrition: programming and education
Prescription for medication refills
Free eyeglasses for reading
Visit with a doctor

ICPL Arts & Crafts Bazaar returns Dec. 2

The Iowa City Public Library Friends Foundations is pleased to announce the return of its Annual Arts & Crafts Bazaar, happening at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 2, 2023, in Meeting Room A of the Library. This community-loved event promises a delightful showcase of unique, handcrafted items, perfect for the holiday season.

A Celebration of Local Talent and Craftsmanship
The Bazaar will feature a wide range of one-of-a-kind gifts such as quilts, hand-knitted items, jewelry, holiday ornaments, and more, all crafted and donated by local artists and crafters.

Supporting the Community through Creativity
Proceeds from this year's sale will benefit the ICPL Friends Foundation, supporting the Iowa City Public Library's programs, services, and collections.

Call for Donations
We warmly invite local artists and crafters to contribute their handcrafted items to the Arts & Crafts Bazaar. If you're interested in donating, please complete the donation form. Ideal donations include:

  • Children’s items: Soft/wooden toys, blankets, bibs, hats, puppets.
  • Home goods: Quilts, wall hangings, pillows, napkins, small framed art, miniatures, potholders, plates/bowls.
  • Personal accessories: Scarves, jewelry, hats, shawls, bags.
  • Holiday items: Ornaments, stockings, garland.

Please Note: We cannot accept food, plants, large or fragile items, and those not handmade or new. The Library reserves the right to reject any unsuitable donations.
