Trick-or-Treat safely this Halloween

Iowa CityIOWA CITY -- The City's trick-or-treat event takes place from 5:30 - 8 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 31, 2023. Before you go out, check out these safety tips from the Iowa City Police and Fire Departments:

  • Costumes should be safe for walking. Avoid long, billowing fabrics.
  • Wear sturdy shoes.
  • Be visible. Carry a flashlight or wear something lighted.
  • Children should be accompanied by an adult or responsible teen.
  • Do not enter homes.
  • Stay away from candles and open flames.
  • Use a battery operated candle for jack-o-lanterns.
  • Do not eat treats until they are brought home and examined by an adult.
  • Drivers should be alert and on the lookout for children.

Don't trash your pumpkin

Remember to toss your jack-o-lantern in your yard waste container, not in your trash.

To compost, remove any candles or lights from inside your pumpkin and place it in your organics container, or in a brown paper yard waste bag, and then set it at the curb for collection on your normal service day. Limit 50 pounds per cart or bag.

Johnson County residents can also bring their pumpkins to the City's compost facility at no cost. The facility is located at the Iowa City Landfill and Recycling Center, 3900 Hebl Ave SW.

To learn more, visit icgov.org/organics or call 319-356-5151.
