The survey will help IACP define the qualifications for an ideal Chief of Police candidate, based on the needs of our community. The survey is open to all community members. Cedar Rapids residency is not a requirement.

  • Myrtle Avenue, between Riverside Drive and Olive Street
  • Reduced to one lane of alternating traffic

It is anticipated normal traffic will resume by the end of the day. This lane reduction will facilitate work on a driveway installation for a new building in the area.

Iowa City Police asking for public's assistance in two assault investigations

The Iowa City Police Department is seeking the public's assistance in investigating two separate assaults that occurred downtown on Sunday, Aug. 27, 2023. Police would like to speak with the individuals pictured below.

One assault occurred at 12:31 a.m. in the Pedestrian Mall at 125 S. Dubuque St. In this incident, a man was assaulted by another individual and knocked unconscious. He was hospitalized for his injuries.

A second assault occurred at 2:09 a.m. in the alley off of the 100 Block of South Clinton Street. In this incident, a man was assaulted by another individual and hospitalized due to injuries suffered in the attack.

These incidents are being actively investigated by the Iowa City Police Department and we are asking the public for assistance. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Iowa City Police Department at 319-356-5275. In addition, anyone in that area with security cameras is asked to review their recordings and contact the Iowa City Police Department with any potential footage or information about this incident.

Iowa City Area Crime Stoppers is also offering a reward of up to $1,000 for information about this incident that leads to an arrest. Crime Stoppers tips can be submitted via the P3 Tips app, online at iccrimestoppers.org, or by phone at 319-358-TIPS (8477). All tips and calls are held in strict confidence and anonymity is guaranteed. Individuals providing information are not required to reveal their identity to collect a reward.

Candidate Filing Information for Coralville City Election

CoralvilleThe Office of Mayor and two City Council positions will be on the ballot for the 2023 Coralville City election on November 7.  Coralville has five City Council members who serve overlapping four-year terms. The Mayor serves a two-year term. 

One of the council seats fills the seat of Keith Jones, who was appointed in June 2022 to fill the remainder of a term. The council seat held by appointee Jones will be filled immediately by the elected City Council candidate with the most votes once the canvass of votes is completed on November 14, 2023. The City Council candidate with the second-highest vote total and the Mayor will both take office on January 1, 2024.

Running for Office
Candidates running for Coralville City Council or Mayor may officially declare their candidacy by filing nomination papers with the Johnson County Auditor during the filing period from August 28 through September 21, 2023, at 5:00 pm. 

Coralville's nomination process is nomination by petition, with one election. Candidates are required to have a minimum of 50 signatures from registered voters residing in Coralville on their petitions. Nomination papers can be picked up at the Johnson County Auditor's Office, 913 S. Dubuque Street, Iowa City, or available at the Iowa Secretary of State website.
