North Liberty has plans to make improvements to key infrastructure. Once completed, these infrastructure upgrades will increase transportation capacity, improve our parks, add pedestrian connectivity and more. At noon each Friday in March, we’re hosting a virtual open house with members of the project teams focusing on plans for this year and the future.

On March 31, we talked with Planning Technician Sara Doermann and Charlie Cowell of RDG Planning and Design about the extension of Jones Boulevard between Penn to 240th streets, which will begin in May 2022, and the comprehensive plan updated, Connected to Tomorrow. You can view the slides from the presentation here.

Now that the last west of the Jones Boulevard extension is in city limits, the timing is right. The extension will include sidewalk and trail, add space for a lane for north-turning traffic from Penn Street and serve the coming development to the west of Jones Boulevard.

Meanwhile, the comprehensive plan, the document that guides big-picture development is currently undergoing a major revision. The public can offer input at through a survey, by mapping ideas and an April 21 in-person workshop.

Registration for future presentations is open. Learn more about projects, get updates by signing up for our Project Updates emaillike us on Facebookfollow us on Twitter or join us on Nextdoor.

Fire Hydrant Flushing in Coralville

Fire hydrant flushingThe City of Coralville Water Department will flush fire hydrants north of Oakdale Boulevard in Coralville starting the week of April 4. Crews will begin in the northeast part of Coralville, starting north of Oakdale Boulevard and east of 1st Avenue. Hydrant flushing is expected to last until late May, weather permitting. Hydrant flushing locations will be updated weekly as crews progress through Coralville.

As a result of hydrant flushing, residents in the vicinity may notice water running down the street, or a temporary discoloration of their water which does not affect the water safety. In the event of discolored water, run cold water from a faucet until the water clears.

Hydrant flushing is an annual water system maintenance practice that moves water through the pipelines fast enough to remove sediment, and allows the City to service fire hydrants and check water pressure. For more information, please contact the Coralville Water Department at 319.248.1770 or the Utility Billing Department at 319.248.1715.

Fiber-To-Home Internet Service Coming to Coralville

In 2021, two telecommunications companies notified the City of Coralville of their plans to extend fiber-to-the-home internet service to Coralville residents. ImOn Communications, based in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and MetroNet, based in Evansville, Indiana, are starting construction this year.

Benefits of Fiber-to-Home
Both MetroNet and ImOn Communications entered into an agreement with the City to build a fiber-to-home network, which installs fiber optic-enabled internet service throughout Coralville. A direct fiber connection brings newer technology, robust bandwidth, faster speeds, reduced slowdowns during peak hours, and increased reliability throughout the community. This brings more convenience -- whether for businesses, working from home, or downloading high-definition movies.

Connecting Your Home or Business
The network is being built through Coralville, but not to homes and businesses. Residents and businesses can opt to get connected to services from MetroNet or ImOn Communications. Both companies indicated that fiber-to-home service will be made available as individual areas are built out, but full build-out of Coralville won’t be completed until sometime in 2023. There is no requirement for residents or businesses to sign up for fiber-to-home service once construction is complete. Each company owns and manages their network to bring a reliable connection throughout Coralville.

What Is Being Installed
An additional telecommunications line made up of fiber optic cabling is being installed in the city’s right-of-way and utility easements. Where utilities are overhead, they will be installed on existing telephone poles; in areas where utilities are buried, cables will be installed underground.

What You Can Expect
Residents and businesses in construction areas will receive communications from MetroNet and ImOn Communications, including mail and yard signs, before work begins in their area. Crews will mark underground utility locations with temporary paint and utility flags. Do not remove utility locates flags in your yard. They identify the locations of underground utilities such as public water main, sanitary sewer, storm sewer, or private utilities like electric, gas, phone, cable, or internet.

MetroNet and ImOn Communications contractors will install fiber optic network cables. The construction phase is temporary. Underground boring machines install the fiber-optic cables just below the surface to minimize disturbing properties.  MetroNet and ImOn Communcations contractors will do their best to minimize any impact to property as they work within the utility easement areas. Contractors will rake, seed, and straw lawns as needed in areas where digging occurred.

Contractor Access
MetroNet and ImOn Communcations crews will be identifiable by ID tags and vehicles marked with the company names. MetroNet and ImOn Communications have obtained the permits to build out their network in the City of Coralville. Both companies have rights to access the Right of Way, which is between the sidewalk and the curb, and utility easement areas. It is common to have easements running parallel to the street and within the lot, and down side lot lines or along rear lot lines. If you have a utility easement on your property, conditions apply to use this part of the land.

To see a map of MetroNet’s planned construction areas, visit https://construction.metronetinc.com/l/CoralvilleIA. Additional planned construction areas will be added on an ongoing basis as plans develop. Maps will be shared as they become available.

For more information about MetroNet, call 1.877.386.3876. For more information about ImOn Communications, call 319.298.6484. For other questions, contact the Coralville Engineering Department at 319.248.1720.

Food Review: Burger King's Bacon Whopper Melt - Bachelor on the Cheap

Burger King Bacon Whopper Melt
Nice toast on the toast

Mike Thayer

Burger King's newest sandwich, the Whopper Melt, packs a junior punch.

Innovating with their Whopper, Burger King does a play on the classic patty melt, with their new Whopper Melt featuring toasted bread layered with two Whopper Jr. patties for a total of 1/4 pound of beef, melted American cheese, caramelized onions and BK's signature "Stacker Sauce."

I'm a Patty Melt fan, so I've been wanting to try this new offering since it was released earlier this month.  For those of you who don't know what a classic Patty Melt is, it's a burger topped with grilled onions, a slice of melted Swiss cheese, served on grilled Rye Bread.  Variations include the use of American cheese instead of Swiss and Texas Toast replacing the Rye.

BK Bacon Whopper Melt
It's not a big sandwich, it should be called a Whopper Melt Jr. and not the best meat to bun ratio either...

Now when I hear "Whopper," I automatically think of BK's regular, Whopper sandwich and a full size quarter pound patty.  So when this new Whopper Melt with two patties was first announced, I was thinking this was going to be a GI-NORMOUS sandwich with not one, but TWO quarter pound Whopper patties!  Fantastic!  But no, in reading the menu description after that initial announcement WHOPPER MELT marketing hype, there it was in the small print...  Two Whopper Jr. Patties - 1/8 pound each - make up the sandwich.  Note however, the sandwich is NOT called a Whopper Melt Jr.  If you don't read the description before ordering one, you might come away disappointed.

Burger King gives you three Whopper Melt options, The original Whopper Melt as described above, along with a Bacon Whopper Melt and a Spicy Whopper Melt featuring jalapenos and a 'creamy spicy' sauce rather than the stacker sauce.

BK Whopper Melt
A look under the lid

Hitting my neighborhood BK drive through at about 11am, I ordered the Whopper Melt with bacon.  I could have gone with the original, but then again, everything is better with bacon.  I received my sandwich in a fair amount of time and the aroma emanating from the BK bag on the drive home was pretty intense.  Once home and after taking a few pics, I took that first bite...  The meat was prepared properly and delivered that classic BK grilled flavor, the toast was nicely toasted, the cheese was on point melted but the onions could have used a bit more cook time.  As far as the stacker sauce goes, too sweet! And so is the toast.  All that sweetness overpowers all the savory flavors in this sandwich.  I don't want a sweet burger experience, I want savory!  Even the savory bacon was overwhelmed by the sweetness of that toast and sauce, sweet toast and sauce flavors lingered on the tongue, NOT burger and onion!  I was looking forward to this sandwich, but came away disappointed.  Silver lining, I wasn't craving anything sweet for dessert!

Costing me $6.23 for just the sandwich, I'm giving the Burger King Bacon Whopper Melt 3 out of 5 Bachelor on the Cheap stars.  This really isn't a Whopper Melt without the classic quarter pound patty, it's a Whopper Melt Jr., shame on BK for the marketing ploy.  More importantly, the savory notes of grilled burger, bacon, onions and melted cheese are overpowered by a bread and sauce that are just too sweet.  This isn't a patty melt sandwich, this is a patty sweet sandwich, a junior one at that and it is NOT worthy of a repeat buy.  This is a limited time sandwich offer and that's a good thing.  I won't be sad to see this item dropped from the menu.
