Elvis_2CORALVILLE -- After multiple postponements due to the pandemic, the Coralville Center for the Performing Arts is thrilled to welcome back Joseph Hall and his “Elvis Rock ‘N Remember” tribute Saturday, August 7 at 7:00 PM.

In Hall's Elvis Rock ‘N Remember show, he achieves a powerful flashback experience to the moment when fans fell in love with the talented, handsome, carefree, energetic, high-spirited young man that is Elvis Presley. The show is masterfully produced with a mixture of Elvis hits from rock ‘n roll, country, pop to gospel, multiple costume changes and a heartfelt tribute to our veterans. He's even got the teddy bears and scarves to woo the ladies. A must-see for all ages!

Joseph Hall, born in 1984 has been paying tribute to the legacy of Elvis Presley since 2006. He starred on NBC's America's Got Talent in 2008, making 6 TV appearances, viewed by more than 90 million people and placing as one of the top 10 finalists! Sharon Osbourne impressed enough to tell him, "I've got shoes older than you, but I'd like to try you on!" Also, Piers Morgan quoted saying, " ELVIS IS BACK!" Joseph Hall has performed all over the world! Joseph Hall has won accolades throughout his young career including the "Spirit of Elvis " award. Joseph Hall has worked with Elvis Presley Enterprises, Legends in Concert, and has officially been recognized as one of the top tribute artists in the world today. Hall says "My goal is to capture the essence of Elvis Presley, to pay tribute with the utmost respect to his legacy, his music, his image and above all else his fans.”

1st Avenue Floodgate Construction Begins

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA – Construction on the 1st Avenue East floodgate is anticipated to begin on Monday, July 19, 2021. Designed to protect to the 2008 flood volume, the gate will be a roller gate similar to the one already completed on 16th Avenue SE in NewBo. The 1st Avenue floodgate is scheduled to be completed in 2022.

Work will begin north of 1st Avenue, where crews will excavate and pour a floodwall foundation where the gate will be installed. During this time, travel lanes on 1st Avenue near 1st Street will be restricted to one lane each direction. Temporary parking restrictions will also be in effect on the 1st Avenue bridge, near the 1st Street intersection. On-street parking will still be available throughout other areas of the 1st Avenue bridge. Parking in front of City Hall will remain available, with pedestrian access maintained.

Updates on other flood control projects in this area include: 

1st Street NE

The storm sewer work on 1st Street NE (between A Avenue NE – 1st Avenue East) has recently been completed. These improvements will help consolidate drainage outfalls to the Cedar River, will direct downtown storm water to a future pump station, and will help facilitate the construction of the floodgate across 1st Avenue.

Also recently completed is the installation of temporary traffic signals at 1st Avenue and 1st Street East; crews continue with sidewalk ADA improvements. The temporary signals will help ensure additional curb, ADA, and future trail work can be completed. The signals will also allow for changing traffic patterns during construction of the 1st Avenue floodgate. Permanent signals will be installed once work on the 1st Avenue floodgate is completed.

Cedar RapidsCEDAR RAPIDS, IA – Starting on Monday, July 19, 2021, sanitary sewer and pavement improvements will begin on 20th Street NE. The road will be closed between B Avenue NE and A Avenue NE until approximately the end of August.


Cedar RapidsCEDAR RAPIDS, IA – The Bridge Under the Bridge will be holding a Community Block Party this Saturday, July 17, 2021, from 2:00 p.m. (set up begins July 16, 2021 at 10:00 p.m.) until 9:00 p.m. (tear down ends by 11:00 p.m.). 

The following streets will be utilized for the event:

  • 1st Street SE from 5th Avenue to 7th Avenue
  • 6th Avenue SE from 1st Street SE to 170’+/- northeasterly

A “No Parking/Tow Away” zone will be enforced on these streets from July 16, 2021 at 10:00 p.m. to July 17, 2021 at 11:00 p.m. per Municipal Code Sections 61.094 and 61.094A.

Corridor Business Journal invites Forty Under 40 nominations

40 zoomNORTH LIBERTY – The Corridor Business Journal (CBJ) is seeking nominations for its 2021 Forty Under 40 class. These annual awards recognize 40 leaders under the age of 40 who have made a significant impact in their business and community early in their careers.

Nominees must live or work in the Corridor and be under 40 years old as of Oct. 14 to qualify. A panel composed of 2020 honorees will select this year’s class. Honorees are selected based on the totality of their career, past and present civic, corporate and nonprofit activities, and leadership roles.

The nomination form is available online at Nominations must include the nominee’s recent resume or bio, a brief statement about why they should be selected, and an additional letter(s) of recommendation. All nomination materials must be submitted together electronically. Nominations are due Aug. 12.

Bever Woods Neighborhood Considered for National Register

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA – A SE-side neighborhood is being considered for the National Register of Historic Places.

The Bever Woods neighborhood was surveyed in 2019 and was found eligible for the National Register. A neighborhood meeting is planned for Wednesday, July 14, at 6:00 p.m. at the Bever Park pavilion (located off Bever Avenue near the pool entrance) to share what this process means with area residents. All interested residents are welcome to attend. Residents are encouraged to bring any historic information they have on their properties, which could be of use for the nomination (abstracts, photos, etc.).

Neighborhoods that are added to the National Register are promoted and distinguished for adding historic value to Cedar Rapids. The National Register designation does not impose design requirements on property owners, and allows for certain incentives and benefits to be accessed from the National Park Service.

The 2019 historic survey was completed in 2020 and involved archival research and fieldwork, along with photographic documentation of buildings in the area. The Bever Woods area is bounded by Bever Park on the east, Bever Avenue SE on the south, 21st Street SE on the west, and Grande Avenue SE on the north.

Looking ahead, upon completion of the nomination forms, the nomination would be submitted to the State Historic Preservation Office for review by a state committee in spring 2022. If approved, the area would then be listed as a National District.
