Landfill announces temporary Saturday closure for commercial waste haulers and contractors

The Iowa City Landfill and Recycling Center has been closed to the general public since Wednesday, March 18, 2020. Despite this closure, it has remained open to commercial waste haulers and contractors.

Landfill hours of operation for Commercial Waste Haulers and Contractors

Beginning Saturday, April 4, the Landfill will also be closed on Saturdays for ALL customers, including commercial haulers and contractors, until further notice. Monday through Friday hours will continue normally (7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.) for commercial waste haulers and contractors only.

Worker safety

In an effort to keep our garbage and recycling workers safe during the COVID-19 outbreak, the City urges residents to limit the number of bags that workers must handle directly.

Here's how you can help:

  • The Iowa City Landfill and Recycling Center, like other area landfills, is closed to the public, so we know it is particularly difficult to find a place to dispose of items right now. Please delay any spring cleaning, if possible, and only dispose of essential garbage at this time.
  • Remember that many items can be recycled or composted through our curbside service. Find out what to put in your different carts on our website and
  • If you do have an extra bag of trash, place it on top of your garbage container with the extra garbage sticker visible to the driver. If you absolutely need to dispose of more than one extra bag, please set it on the ground beside your cart.
  • Make sure all your garbage bags are sealed and completely closed. The extra garbage sticker requirement remains enforced. This limits the need for collection workers to handle extra bags.

Thanks for your help in keeping these services running by keeping our essential staff healthy
