At approximately 2:20 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2019, Iowa City police responded to Tate High School to investigate a report that a gun was exchanged in the parking lot the day before.
According to the principal, a parent reported during a parent-teacher conference that they observed a gun exchange in the parking lot the day prior, at about 3 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2019.
Surveillance video confirmed the parent’s observations of the parties involved, but a gun could not be seen on video. Subsequent investigation by the Iowa City Police Department confirmed that a Tate student had possession of a toy gun and was showing it to another student in the parking lot.
The juvenile student was charged with Carrying a Toy Gun in City Limits (City Code 8-7-3 (B)), and was released to their parent.
A criminal charge is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
