From T-Bones to Flanksteak

Iowa City Police officers involved in shooting incident identified by DCI

On August 1, 2019, the Iowa Department of Public Safety’s (DPS) Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) conducted interviews of both Iowa City Police Officers involved in the July 29, 2019 shooting incident of Cierra Lewis (25).

Officer Michael Clark and Officer Trai Bunch were interviewed by Special Agents of the DCI’s Major Crime Unit. Both officer’s provided voluntary statements and have cooperated with the investigation. Preliminary findings indicate Officer Clark discharged his duty weapon in response to a threat imposed upon him by Lewis. Officer Bunch arrived on scene immediately following the shooting and assisted in placing Lewis under arrest. Officer Bunch did not discharge his duty weapon.

Per departmental policy, Officer Clark has been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation. After all interviews are conducted and all evidence is collected, the case facts will be presented to the Johnson County Attorney’s office for review. The investigation is ongoing.
