City taking precautionary steps as Army Corps of Engineers increases reservoir outflows

IOWA CITY -- Due to recent local rainfall and snowmelt, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has increased its outflow from the Coralville Lake Reservoir. Beginning Friday, March 15, 2019, the Corps increased the rate from 7,000 cubic feet per second (cfs) to 10,000 cfs.

Residents may notice increased water levels in the Iowa River. Low lying areas in Iowa City, including some parks and trails, can be impacted at these outflow rates. There is currently no major flooding event expected with this outflow change.

The City utilizes information from multiple agencies when preparing for and responding to river flood conditions. Helpful information for the public can be found at The National Weather Service website and The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers River Gages website.

Current Closures

  • Iowa River Trail at the Highway 6 underpass, located just south of Riverfront Crossings Park, 1101 S. Clinton St. Pedestrians and bicyclists should use an alternate route.
