The City of Iowa City is rolling out new, larger recycling carts to customers in December.
You may have noticed some of your neighbors already have 65-gallon carts. The City will be delivering carts to all remaining households that receive curbside service Dec. 10-22, 2018.
Customers do not need to reserve, order, or pick up a cart. They will be delivered along with important program information that is also available at icgov.org/recycling.
The new carts are similar to trash carts, but feature a blue lid. When full, place them at the curb by 7 a.m. on your regular collection day, leaving several feet between carts to allow for the truck's mechanical arm to empty the bin. For more tips on how to use curbside service, watch this video.
Customers who do not receive a cart by the end of December are asked to call 319-356-5151. To receive curbside service notices and updates about cart distribution, sign-up at icgov.org/subscribe.
A $106,000 grant from The Recycling Partnership will assist the City with the purchase and delivery of carts to the 16,000 Iowa City households that receive curbside services, in addition to a robust, customized public education campaign. The Recycling Partnership is a national nonprofit that leverages corporate partner funding to transform recycling for good in cities and towns all across America. The grant is supported in part by the All In On Recycling challenge in conjunction with the PepsiCo Foundation.
Residents are welcome to keep their older blue 18-gallon recycling bins, but the City will also collect and recycle unwanted bins.
Crews will collect old bins curbside on your regular service day the weeks of:
There will also be drop-off events at the City's Public Works complex, 3800 Napoleon Lane.
New organics carts will also be available to customers to use for yard and food waste.
The City recently received a shipment of yellow lidded, 25 and 95-gallon carts and will begin distributing them to customers who have previously requested them.
The City has reopened online requests for 95-gallon carts. Fill out the online form at icgov.org/organics or call 319-356-5151. Carts will be delivered based on availability and staff time. Waits will vary.
Smaller 25-gallon carts will again be available for pick-up next spring. No sign up needed. More details to come.
