Steady Iowa is No. 30 in 2018 preseason college football rankings

Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz recently said what’s impressed him about the Big Ten was consistent success among the teams.

The Hawkeyes have arguably been a model of that consistency under Ferentz. Iowa is 82-48 during the past decade, including a division title in 2015. This year’s Hawkeyes squad is young and inexperienced, presenting challenges for Ferentz and his staff.

Despite those hurdles, Iowa should remain a factor in the Big Ten West Division and is No. 30 in Orlando Sentinel college insider Matt Murschel’s preseason 2018 college football rankings. Murschel ranked all 129 Football Bowl Subdivision teams in the country. The Sentinel staff takes a closer look at a new team daily, counting backward from No. 129 to our projected No. 1 team.

Chicago Cubs see acquisition of Cole Hamels as educated gamble

ST. LOUIS -- The Chicago Cubs are banking on the character of the man more than what the numbers say when it comes to their new pitching acquisition, left-hander Cole Hamels.

"We were looking beyond his recent struggles, and looking at the pitcher, overall, and the man, overall, that he is," Cubs president Theo Epstein said Friday.

Hamels, 35, was acquired from the Texas Rangers earlier in the day for pitcher Eddie Butler, a minor league pitcher and a player to be named. Hamels has an 11.12 ERA in four July starts spanning 17 innings. He is 5-9 this season with a 4.72 ERA in 20 starts.
