Cedar Rapids increases stormwater utility rates to align them with amount of a property’s runoff | TheGazette

CEDAR RAPIDS — The city on Monday, July 1, is increasing its monthly stormwater utility fees for commercial, industrial and multifamily residential properties with more than four units.

The change will raise additional revenue for the city’s stormwater management program as it tries to align the fee to the size of property and the amount of stormwater than runs off it.

During the discussion of the Richmond and Rubio sanitary sewer projects at the Washington County Board  of Supervisors meeting June 25, Supervisor Jack Seward Jr. was announced that Washington County had received a notice of violation letter from the Iowa DNR regarding the Administrative Consent Order signed on November 1, 2011. 

The DNR letter noted that the March 1, 2013 deadline to let bids for the sewer system projects had passed and the terms of the Consent Order had not been met.

Water filled their home early Wednesday morning in an area they say never floods. The Recker's live among a few houses about five miles outside of Hopkinton. They said people who have lived there for nearly a century have never seen their tiny stream flood anything.

Felony charges were dropped on Thursday against a 20-year-old University of Virginia student who says she panicked when undercover agents from the state's Alcohol Beverage Control division mistook her water purchase for beer.

According to Charlottesville (Va.) Daily Progress, the student, Elizabeth Daly, was walking to her car on April 11 at approximately 10:15 p.m. with a box of sparkling water, cookie dough and ice cream she had just bought from a local supermarket when the agents—six men and one woman, all in plainclothes—approached suspecting the box, a blue carton of LaCroix sparkling water, to be a 12-pack of beer. One jumped on the hood of her SUV; another pulled out a gun, Daly said, as her roommates seated inside looked on in horror.


Paula Deen dropped by publisher -

Paula Deen's no good very bad month continued Friday when her publisher announced it was canceling the publication of her cookbook -- despite it skyrocketing to the top of the best-seller list on Amazon.

Balllantine Books was to release "Paula Deen's NewTestament: 250 Favorite Recipes, All Lightened Up" on October 15, but said Friday it had cancelled the publication.


Woman Drinks Only Soda for 16 Years, Suffers Heart Problems - Yahoo! News

A 31-year old woman's heart problems and fainting might have had something to do with the fact that she drank only soda for about half her life, according to a report of her case.

The woman, who lives in Monaco, a small country near southern France, was brought to a hospital after she fainted. A blood test showed she had severely low potassium levels. And a test of her heart's electrical activity revealed she had a condition called long QT syndrome, which can cause erratic heart beats.

Lopez sings 'Happy Birthday' to Turkmenistan head - Yahoo! News

NEW YORK (AP) — Jennifer Lopez sang "Happy Birthday" to the leader of Turkmenistan during a show, but her representative said she wouldn't have performed there at all if she had known there were human rights issues in the country.

The singer and actress performed in the former Soviet bloc country on Saturday night. A statement released Sunday by her publicist said the event was hosted by the China National Petroleum Corp. and wasn't a political event.
