Black box shows co-pilot Lubitz sped up plane's descent -

Marseille, France (CNN)Initial tests on the flight data recorder recovered from downed Germanwings Flight 9525 show that co-pilot Andreas Lubitz purposely used the controls to speed up the plane's descent, according to the French air accident investigation agency, the BEA.

The flight data recorder, or "black box," was found Thursday by recovery teams that have spent days since the March 24 crash scouring the mountainside in the French Alps where the plane went down.

Southwest Airlines Can Use Planes That Missed Inspection, FAA Says - ABC News

Federal officials agreed to let Southwest Airlines keep using planes that missed an inspection of a backup rudder system if the planes are checked in the next five days.

Southwest grounded 128 planes — about one-fifth of its fleet — on Tuesday after discovering the missed inspections.

According to a statement by the airline, the Boeing 737-700 jets were found to have overflown a required check.

US airfares on the rise, outpacing inflation - Yahoo Finance

NEW YORK (AP) -- Travelers, prepare to pay more for your flight.

The average roundtrip ticket within the U.S., including taxes, reached $509.15 in the first six months of this year, up nearly $14 from the same period last year. Domestic airfare continues to outpace inflation, rising 2.7 percent compared to the 2.1 percent gain in the Consumer Price Index.

Airfare has gone up 10.7 percent in the past five years — after adjusting for inflation — according to an Associated Press analysis of data from the Airlines Reporting Corp., which processes ticket transactions for airlines and more than 9,400 travel agencies, including websites such as Expedia and Orbitz

No-fly list redress procedures ruled unconstitutional - CBS News

It's the nation's first ruling to label the no-fly list redress procedures unconstitutional.

U.S. District Court Judge Anna Brown's decision handed down Tuesday says the procedure offered to people to remove themselves from the list fails to give travelers a meaningful mechanism to challenge their placement.

Thirteen people challenged their placement on the list in 2010, including four military veterans.


Surf's up! We Want to Visit America's Top 10 Beaches

A tourist-friendly beach named for a Hawaii surfing legend has been dubbed the best public beach in the United States in this year’s Dr. Beach ranking.

Duke Kahanamoku Beach in Honolulu, a well-groomed crescent of blond sand and palm trees near the Hilton Hawaiian Village Waikiki Beach Resort, beat out more than 600 other beaches for the distinction.

Stephen Leatherman, a Florida International University coastal science professor who goes by the nickname Dr. Beach, said the cleanliness, safe conditions and amenities pushed Duke Kahanamoku to the top of his 24th annual list.
