Spring Fever In January

Mike ThayerBy Mike Thayer

So my girlfriend Cindy and I went through the seed catalogs and our seed stash yesterday, it's only January but boy are we ready for spring and playing in the dirt (not to be confused with mud wrestling, although the thought did obviously cross my mind.....).

Starting seeds in eggshellsAs Cindy thumbed through Burpee's, Gurney's and a couple of other catalogs, I took stock of the seeds on hand and getting some packets organized for pre-planting.  Cindy has a nice set-up in her basement, trays, shelving, lighting, the whole bit.  I've never had the luxury and I'm really looking forward to that.  It means far less time spent starter plant buying and more time in the garden!  Something new we're going to try - starting some seeds in egg shells, an idea I found online and have been wanting to try.  I'm a huge user of putting crushed egg shells in the garden, as they add calcium and rid the garden of slug/snail infestation.  I'll blog about the egg shell seed-starter experiment with a play-by-play and let you know how that goes.

A variety of tomatoes were ordered from the catalogs, to include a hearty beefsteak we've never tried.  I just love being able to cover that perfect sandwich bread with a juicy tomato that's big enough to do it with just one slice.  None of that three slices from a medium tomato falling out of the sandwich for me!  Along with the tomato order, a nice selection of flowers were ordered as well and it won't be long before stores start putting spring bulbs on display.  Cindy has some tulips and daffodils in the ground that will look great in the spring, but there's a need for some summer blooming varieties in the beds.  Between the catalogs and what the stores put on shelves, I'm sure we'll find what we're looking for.

Cindy and I both love to garden, it's a simple pleasure for me, from creating veggie or flower beds, to planting, to weeding, to the harvest.  I'm into it all, from start to finish. For Cindy, while she loves being able to just go out in the backyard and pick fresh produce for dinner (it doesn't get any fresher!), she's really into it because she loves to can even more.  She makes a fantastic salsa!   And yes, I'll post the recipe.

Well, it's time to go buy some potting soil!

She Sheds: A Woman's Man Cave | Granite Transformations Blog

Today’s woman doesn’t have to look any further than her own backyard to discover the perfect space to escape from her day-to-day chaos and indulge in a haven all her own. Most women would agree that they are overscheduled and are in desperate need of some “me” time. She sheds have become the latest trend in transforming a backyard storage shed into a secluded retreat. Just as men have their man caves and kids have their playrooms, now is the time for women to claim their space and indulge in the private time they deserve.

After Halloween, compost your pumpkins

Don’t just throw out that pumpkin after Halloween! The City of Iowa City Solid Waste Division reminds you to compost it instead.

Pumpkins must be placed in a City of Iowa City yard waste bag or a container with a current yard waste sticker. There is a 50-pound weight limit per bag. Pumpkins should not be put in your regular household garbage container.

Yard waste bags, priced at $1.25 each, are available for purchase at participating Iowa City grocery, hardware and general merchandise stores, and at the Iowa City City Hall Cashier (410 E. Description:
Foraging for mushrooms in Lake Macbride State Park.

Our instructors are from the Prairie States Mushroom Club (PSMC). PSMC promotes scientific and educational activities related to fungi and fosters the appreciation of wild and cultivated mushrooms. PSMC advocates the sustainable use of mushrooms as a resource and endorse responsible mushroom collecting that preserves natural areas and their biological diversity.

At 1pm, we will present a short program detailing some mushroom hunting and identifying tips. Some favorite mushroom books will be discussed, and edible fall mushrooms will be listed. Then we head into the woods. We expect to split up into smaller groups, each lead by a mushroom club member. We will meet back at the parking lot at about 2:45pm to discuss our fungal finds. Scientific names will be assigned to all fungi that we can identify. Edible and poisonous mushrooms will be compared as some look quite similar to each other.

Edible Outdoors (EO) is a community of people dedicated to learning about foraging, hunting and fishing in the active classroom of the outdoors. EO explores the true nature of what our land can provide in a respectful and sustainable way. Our mission is to connect people to people, land and our resources in a way that benefits nature.

Thank you!
Rachel Vanderwerff
