First responders to take part in emergency drill at Iowa City Municipal Airport on May 17

The Johnson County Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC) is partnering with the Iowa City Municipal Airport and several public safety agencies to conduct its annual preparedness exercise.

The drill will take place between 8 a.m. and noon, central time, on Wednesday, May 17, 2017, at the Iowa City Municipal Airport,1801 S. Riverside Dr., Iowa City. Participating agencies include the Iowa City Fire and Police Departments, Johnson County Ambulance Service, Johnson County Medical Examiners Office, Salvation Army of Iowa City, CARE and AMT ambulance services, University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Mercy Iowa City and the Iowa City VA Health Care System, as well as the Johnson County Homeland Security & Emergency Management Agency.

This preparedness exercise is an annual chance to train with local partners and public safety responders on various scenarios to assure readiness for any type of hazardous event that may occur within Johnson County. The Iowa City Municipal Airport was generous enough to offer responders a chance to train and conduct exercises with staff.

“These types of public/private partnerships are essential to maintaining a state of readiness throughout the County,” Johnson County Emergency Management Coordinator Dave Wilson said. “This exercise will test mass casualty management, fire suppression on Jet A fuels, mass fatality management and incident command functions, which are part of on-scene activities, and the focus for the exercise this year."

In addition, three local hospitals and two local private ambulance providers will also exercise components of their integration into the scenario and practice hospital functions needed in response to a large mass casualty and mass fatality incident.

The media is welcome for questions and answers and will have an opportunity to capture exterior video or images of the drill. Public information officers will brief the media onsite from 10 to 11 a.m.
