From their feathered couches, American viewers made “Duck Dynasty” — about a Louisiana clan and its duck-hunting-gear business — the most watched show on television the week of its August premiere, securing the A&E network hit as the most successful cable reality series ever.

A similar fervor for rural good fun, in practice or vicariously, is also impelling many thousands a year to travel as far as hundreds of miles to one of Cabela’s (CAB) 40 megastores, where massive displays of stuffed game greet shoppers who come for the vast selection of hunting, fishing and camping goods.



Two-toned lobster, blue lobster caught in same week

Experts say the odds of catching a two-tone lobster are about 1 in 50 million. Yet a fisherman off Maine recently hauled in a lobster that was half orange and half brown (pictured above).

“It looked as if someone had taken painter’s tape and run it from proboscis to tail, then spray-painted one side. It’s a perfectly straight line,” Alan Lishness, of the Gulf of Maine Research Institute, told Reuters. “You don’t usually see such hard edges in nature.”


Zumanjaro Drop of Doom: Presenting The World’s Tallest Drop Tower [Video]

The Zumanjaro Drop of Doom is an ambitious 415ft drop tower ride which, when built will be the world’s tallest. A New Jersey based company is planning to build the ride for the Six Flags Great Adventure theme park in Jackson, in 2014.

The ascent to the massive 41-story tower is on an eight-person gondola, which visitors are strapped into for the 30 seconds it takes to reach the top of the tower. There is then a brief pause, while the people in the gondola enjoy a spectacular view, before being plunged vertically down at high speed, in just 10 seconds.


Snooki files $6M suit over alleged perfume-brand “rip-off” -

Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi of “Jersey Shore” TV fame filed a $6 million-plus lawsuit in Manhattan federal court yesterday against New Jersey-based Excell Brands, alleging its new perfume “Snazzy” rips off her official “Snooki” and “Snooki Couture” fragrances.

Calls left with Excell were not immediately returned.

Pirates trade for Twins first baseman Justin Morneau - Yahoo! Sports

The Pittsburgh Pirates acquired long-time Minnesota Twins first baseman and former MVP Justin Morneau, sources said Saturday, their second trade in four days designed to strengthen their lineup and reach the playoffs for the first time in 21 years.

A Twin since days after his 18th birthday, Morneau, 32, has struggled with injuries and concussion symptoms in recent seasons, but still hits right-handed pitching with some authority. The Pirates rank in the bottom third in the National League against right-handers in batting and OPS.


Joe Arpaio: Monitor Will Oversee Sheriff’s Office

Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s new monitor will be keeping an eye on the sheriff’s office. U.S District Judge Murray Snow ordered a monitor to oversee the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office operations. The person will report any discrimination or racist activities to the court.

Judge Snow pointed out that the monitor will not have the power to interfere with police business. However, they are tasked with reporting discrimination against Hispanics.
